Cunningham Gets Bust at Ashton
Steve Cunningham has drafted in five recruits during his opening days as first-team manager of Pitching In Northern Premier League Premier Division club Ashton United.

Andre Mendes, Nathan Lowe, Jack McKay and Jason Gilchrist have all been added to the Robins' ranks. Brazilian goalkeeper Mendes has joined the club on a loan deal from SkyBet League One outfit Morecambe. The 19-year-old has recently enjoyed a successful spell with Colne in the NPL Division One West. Lowe links up with the squad from Vanarama National League North side Kidderminster Harriers following the expiration of his loan deal at another NPL Division One West side, Macclesfield. The combative midfielder scored 18 goals last season as he helped Buxton secure the Northern Premier League title. Jack McKay and Jason Gilchrist have both joined the Robins from National League North side Buxton on a permanent basis. McKay is a 26-year-old forward who joined Buxton in June 2022 from National League side York City. He had joined then Minstermen in December 2021 from then-National League North rivals Curzon Ashton and helped York to win promotion in 2021/22. He had joined the Nash in the summer of 2021 from National League outfit Chesterfield, who he had signed for on a permanent basis in July 2019 from Cardiff City after being on loan with the Spireites from February 2019 until the end of the 2018/19 season. He started his career at Doncaster Rovers and after making just a handful of appearances for the South Yorkshire club, he joined Leeds United. While at Leeds, he had a spell on loan at Scottish side Airdrie before moving to Cardiff in 2018 following an extended trial. Gilchrist is a 28-year-old striker who joined Buxton in December 2021 from then-National League North club York. He had joined the Minstermen in June 2021 from Northern Premier side South Shields. He had arrived at Shields in July 2019 from National League North side Southport having helped Stockport County to win the National North after joining on loan in March 2019. He signed for Port in November 2017 from FC United of Manchester for an undisclosed club record fee. He moved to FC United following his release from Burnley and scored 29 goals in 62 appearances for the Red Rebels. Whilst on Burnley`s books he enjoyed various loan spells at Droylsden, Accrington Stanley and Chester before making the move to Broadhurst Park. He has represented England C. Accomplished defender Sean Newton (pictured) has joined the club from Buxton in a player/assistant manager role. The 34-year-old, a vastly experienced midfielder and natural leader, helped Buxton win promotion to the National League North in 2021/22 after being on loan and then joined the Bucks on a more permanent basis in May 2022 from then-National League North rivals York City. He had signed for the Minstermen in October 2016, initially on loan, from Wrexham. Although arriving at the club as a left-back, the Liverpool-born man has played in a variety of positions including central midfield and wing-back. He started his career with Chester City and has also played for Droylsden, Barrow, AFC Telford United, Stockport County and Lincoln City. He played 5 times for the England C team.
